While Connectix Virtual PC is compatible with other Pentium-compatible operating systems, there are important issues to consider for configuration and usage.
NOTE: Connectix does not provide Technical Support for the usage of unbundled operating systems. Please contact the OS manufacturer for support.
• Windows 3.x - Virtual PC is compatible and the VPC Installation CD-ROM contains Mac integration drivers for Windows 3.x so folder sharing, Mac mouse, and other aspects can be utilized under Windows. See “Mac Integration Installer Instructions” below for details.
• Windows 95 - Virtual PC is compatible and the VPC Installation CD-ROM contains Mac integration drivers for Windows 95 so folder sharing, Mac mouse, and other aspects can be utilized under Windows. See “Mac Integration Installer Instructions” below for details.
• Windows NT - Virtual PC is compatible, but there are no Mac integration components available.
• NeXT OPENSTEP - To Install OPENSTEP, be sure to change the VPC CD-ROM setting from Standard to Alternate in the VPC preferences. Also, most Virtual PC 1.0 performance tuning is for Windows and DOS. Be sure to shutdown from OPENSTEP (LogOut) before quitting VPC to avoid unrecoverable data corruption.
• IBM OS/2 - Virtual PC is compatible, but OS/2 version 2.1 has no support for ATAPI CD-ROM drives. Use a later version of OS/2 to support the Virtual PC CD-ROM. Also, there are no Mac integration components.
Connectix Virtual PC Windows 95 Version comes with a pre-configured drive image containing Windows 95 and several drivers installed for Mac integration (mouse, shared folders, etc.) You should not need to access the Windows 95 integration installer.
If you install a version of Windows 3.11, you may want to install VPC Mac integration drivers. The Mac integration installers for Windows 3.11 are included on the Virtual PC Installer CD-ROM, and they are placed in a folder named Extras in your Virtual PC folder as part of your basic install.
First, you must install Windows 3.11. Once Windows is up and running, do the following:
To Install the integration components hard drive:
1. Quit Virtual PC if it is currently running.
2. Insert the VPC Installer CD-ROM.
3. Run the VPC Installer
4. Select ‘Custom Install’
5. Click the arrow on the left of “Virtual PC Extras”.
6. Click the checkbox to the left of “INSTALL.W31”
7. Click “Install”.
This will create a hard drive container in a folder named “Extras” in a folder named “Virtual PC”.
To install the integration components themselves:
1. Open the Virtual PC application with the option key held down. This acts to bring up the preferences dialog.
2. Double click near the upper left where it says, “D Drive”.
3. Select the “INSTALL.W31” hard drive image.
4. Click “Restart”.
5. Once Windows 3.11 has finished booting, select “Run” from the File menu in Program Manager
6. Type “D:\SETUP.EXE” into the command line.
7. Click “OK”.
8. Follow the directions given by InstallShield, and click Yes to restart your computer.
